Ventral Palladium

We have identified, using non-radioactive in situ hybridization histochemistry, that D3 mRNA-positive neurons are highly concentrated in the ventral striatum, efferents of the ventral striatum (globus pallidus internal, ventral palladium, substantia nigra pars reticulata), and in regions projecting to the ventral striatum (medial dorsal thalamus, nucleus basalis, extended amygdala).

Injections into the lateral ventricles (LV), ventral tegmental area (VTA), or periaqueductal gray (PAG) produced a CPP; injections 1 mm dorsal to the PAG or VTA, or into the caudate putamen, medial frontal cortex, hippocampus, lateral nucleus of the amygdala, lateral hypothalamus, pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus, posterior hypothalamus, ventral palladium, or nucleus accumbens septi (core or shell) did not.

The results indicate that decreases in blood pressure (10-45 mm Hg) and heart rate (20-70 bpm) could be elicited from tuberal (LHAt) and posterior (LHAp) sites in the LHA and that these regions have ascending projections to the insular cortex, the ventral forebrain including the septal-diagonal band of Broca complex, the ventral palladium, substantia innominata, amygdala, and the lateral preoptic area.
